Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are usually noticed when a person experiences pain and tenderness in their jawbone and in the muscles that are used to control jaw movement. These conditions can be the result of many factors, including genetics, arthritis, oral injury, trauma and bruxism. Luckily, most cases of TMJ disorders are temporary, and the problem can often be cured with non-surgical treatment methods.
The experts at Aqua Dental Loft are prepared to provide specialized examinations for patients who we believe may be suffering from a TMJ disorder. These examinations are generally quick and easy, and they typically involve the following steps:
- Listening to the jawbone and feeling it as it is moved
- Measuring the jaw’s range of motion
- Having the patient identify any areas of pain or discomfort near the jaw
While the pain associated with a TMJ disorder may simply disappear on its own, more severe cases may require some sort of medical intervention. If we do determine that a TMJ disorder is indeed the cause of your jaw pain, we may recommend one or more of the following:
- Pain Medication
- Muscle Relaxants
- Physical Therapy
- Mouth Guards
- Injection Therapy
